Traditional Anniversary Gifts
The custom of giving specific gifts for each anniversary is thought to have originated in Central Europe during the Middle Ages. A husband gave his wife a wreath of silver for their 25th anniversary and a wreath of gold for the 50th. The Victorians expanded it to include the 1st, 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th, 25th, 50th and 75th. These "eight anniversaries known to all" were listed by Emily Post in her 1922 Blue Book of Social Usage. Ms. Post also acknowledged the trend toward celebrating additional anniversaries and published a list of gifts for each of the first 15 years of marriage and for every five years after that.
